Frequently Asked Questions
What are the advantages of a Free Taster Session?
A free taster session gives you the opportunity to have a go on a motorcycle, find out if biking is for you and if you are happy with our training school before you commit and to a CBT, other available courses or spending money on a bike or kit. AMTC can supply you with the kit you will need to start riding a bike; this includes a helmet, jacket and the bike itself at no extra cost.
What is involved with a CBT?
You must complete Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before you ride any moped, scooter or motorcycle on the road. If you have a full car licence issued before 1st February 2001, you may ride a restricted 50cc moped on the road without L plates (and carry a passenger), but you still need to pass CBT to ride any motorcycle over 50cc. CBT is a one day practical session by a qualified instructor, which consists of a safety talk and instruction off road as well as on road. The CBT is not a pass or fail, if you are unable to complete the course on the day, you will be offered further tuition to bring you to standard free of charge. A CBT expires after two years, if you have not passed a Direct Access, A1 or A2 then you will need to re-take your CBT.
What is involved with Direct Access?
Since 30th March 2009 the practical Motorcycle test has 2 parts, as well as the road riding section, known as Module two; there are now a series of manoeuvres to be done on a tarmac area at a test centre, this is Module one. There is also a short theory where the examiner will ask 3 questions based on the bike and carrying passengers. information on this will be supplied by your instructor for you to take away and learn prior to the test. You will receive on average 24 hours of training and there is no time limit to this, build your confidence at your own pace. You must be at least 21 years of age to take your Direct Access.
Do I have to do a week intensive course?
No, we do offer intensive courses, however, many of our students prefer to train over longer periods to spread the cost and avoid using their valuable holiday time. Training is available 7 days a week and can be booked at your convenience.
I am between 17 and 20 years old and want to ride, what are my options?
There are two options: Option one is an A2 Motorcycle Licence for 120-125cc and allows you to ride up to 33bhp. After 2 years your A2 Licence becomes a full Category A Licence and you can ride any size motorcycle, even if you're under 21. Option two is an A1 Motorcycle Licence if you only want to ride a 125cc motorcycle, you can train and take the test on a 75cc - 125cc and get a Category A1 Motorcycle Licence. This lets you ride a motorcycle up to 125cc and 14.6 bhp. Your licence will not automatically convert to a full category A Licence, you will need to complete one of the other routes if you want to ride a bigger bike.
How do I book my theory?
You must pass a motorcycle theory test before taking any practical motorcycle test, even if you have a full car licence. If you have passed a two part moped test or a lower category motorcycle test since 1st July 1996 you need not take the theory test. The theory pass certificate is valid for two years and can be booked online through www.direct.gov.uk or through AMTC. AMTC have the facilities to provide support with your theory, you can practice your theory test questions and Hazard Perception or rent DVDs or books.
